Caribbean relaxation at its best
St. James's Club Resort & Villas Antigua   KAalders
Ottawa, canada

If you are looking for a hassle-free place to unwind and enjoy beautiful beaches, wonderful weather and friendly people, then St. James's Club is an excellent choice.

The location is exquisite, with gorgeous beaches on both the ocean and bay sides. My wife and I found the property was well maintained and clean and our "reef villa" was truly delightful - large rooms, clean, comfortable, well-appointed with a kitchen, and an awe-inspiring ocean view from our airy balcony.

The choice of restaurants provided a nice variation (Coco's was our favourite) and both the buffet and á la carte menus offered interesting selections and excellent quality. On our last day, my wife chose á la carte so she could get her cheeseburger in paradise - with fries. The house white wine was quite good, but the red was just average. In general, the selection and quality of refreshments from the beach-cart, pool-side bar, restaurants and evening bar were all delightful. We noted that the evening "Jacaranda" bar appeared a bit stuffy, dark and out-of-place compared to all the other refreshing, open venues at St. James's.

Our stay was just what we needed. We sailed the Hobie-Cats around Mamora Bay every day, went snorkelling and soaked up as much sun as we dared. We enjoyed the Sunday evening party at Shirley Heights overlooking picturesque English Harbour (see photo) and spent a day exploring this world famous sailor's haven - the Maltese Falcon was in port! Also, we really enjoyed the scenic island circumnavigation by catamaran.

For our winter break, getting away from 2+ feet of snow was priority # 1. We mainly used the internet to research this vacation and noticed some variation in comments on the St. James's Club. The majority really liked it, but we noted others' concerns regarding limited nightlife and alcohol. Fortunately, late night partying and rowdy revelling were not on our wish list. We enjoyed the natural beauty of Antigua and found that the staff at St. James', some with enchanting names like Valeshia, Charolyn, Inez, Prince and Treatia, always provided great service with a warm smile.

One of our great vacation memories is peacefully watching the stars light up the night sky, while listening to the breaking waves as we ended our glorious Caribbean day.
