Planning Your Antigua Visit

Practical details to have in hand before you travel.

Currency

The Eastern Caribbean dollar is fixed to the US dollar, recently EC$2.70 to US$1.00. US currency, travelers' checks, and major credit cards are accepted.

Credit Cards

Visa, MasterCard, and Discover are accepted. Due to ongoing processing issues, American Express cannot be used for local charges or incidentals at the hotel until further notice.

Gratuities

Set aside 10–15% for gratuities depending on the service — roughly 50 cents per bag for porters and bellhops, and 10–15% of the fare for taxi drivers.

Time Zone

Antigua observes Atlantic Standard Time: one hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time, the same as Eastern Daylight Time, and four hours behind GMT.

Electricity

The resort uses US standard 110V outlets, the same as in the United States.

Banking Hours

Monday to Thursday, 8am–1pm and 3pm–5pm. Friday, 8am–12pm and 3pm–5pm. Shops keep Monday to Saturday hours of 8am–12pm and 1pm–5pm.

Medical Facilities

The island has general practitioners and specialists, a hospital, a private clinic, and widely available pharmaceutical services. Recompression chambers are reachable by air ambulance.

Appropriate Attire

Elegantly casual. Bathing suits, cover-ups, and towels belong on the beach rather than in town, shops, or restaurants; most restaurants ask for collared shirts and long pants in the evening.

Personal Safety

Antigua is relatively crime-free, but take normal precautions: use the room safe, keep doors and windows locked, and don't leave valuables in rental cars or on the beach.

Departure Taxes

Departure tax is included in your airfare.
